South Korea’s $576 Billion Chip Gamble: Samsung and SK Hynix Lead National AI Push
South Korea has unveiled a $576 billion industrial plan targeting semiconductor and AI dominance, with Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc. committing to build two new fabrication plants each in the country's southwest region. The initiative forms part of President Lee Jae-myung's "Three Mega Projects" - a trifecta of chip production hubs, data centers, and robotics infrastructure that he frames as critical for national survival in the tech arms race.
The semiconductor push includes a $52.7 billion advanced packaging cluster and aims to double DRAM production capacity within five years. While the plan has drawn scrutiny over potential political motivations - given strong voter support for Lee in the chosen southwest location - its scale underscores Korea's determination to maintain its edge in memory chips amid global subsidy wars.
Market observers note the announcement could ripple through crypto markets, particularly tokens tied to AI and compute infrastructure, as nations increasingly view semiconductor sovereignty as strategic priority. The move follows similar multibillion-dollar chip initiatives in the US, EU and China.
